Why a drawing beats a filter for likeness
It sounds backwards, but a generated drawing often looks more like you than a filtered photograph does. A filter works on pixels, so it keeps whatever the camera did — a bad angle, flat lighting, a half-blink — and stylises that. A generated illustration works from the features it reads, and can put them in better light and a better pose. This is also why the result will not match your photo pose: it is not meant to.
Choosing a style for the person
The 3D animated style is the safest for a gift, because its rounded proportions and warm light flatter almost every face. Classic comic has heavy ink and strong shadow, which suits defined features and can be unkind to soft ones. Dreamy anime is the most forgiving on children. Heroic is deliberately exaggerated — good for a joke, less good for a portrait you want someone to recognise instantly.

Why does the cartoon not match my photo exactly?
Because it is drawn rather than filtered. The model reads your features and draws a new picture with them, so the pose, background and framing are composed fresh. Likeness is preserved; the photograph is not reproduced.
